Australia’s rising stars of Women’s Cricket have returned from a successful tour of Sri Lanka

The future of Australia Women’s Cricket has plenty to look forward to if a recent development squad tour is anything to go by.

The Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars took a squad of 13 players to Sri Lanka where two T20s and One-Day fixtures were played – the Australian girls going undefeated.

Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars Head Coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick worked as an assistant on the tour and was impressed by the girls’ ability to acclimatize to conditions.

“They all adapted pretty well. The nets played differently from the middle and generally the bounce and carry was reasonable,” Fitzpatrick said.

“The young net bowlers showed all their tricks and challenged the girls. We were well looked after with facilities and catering, so hard not to adapt quickly.”

Many of the girls recently played in the Women’s National Cricket League and National Underage Championships – bringing their form onto the tour.

A standout performer was opening batter Beth Mooney who amassed 301 runs in just three innings, including unbeaten scores of 144 and 128, catapulting her in contention for senior selection.

“Two very pleasing performances by Beth, in the first game she actually kept for 50 overs, then carried her bat, so a full 100 overs for her.

“We are yet to announce our squads for 2015/16; however Beth is someone who remains a strong candidate to be elevated in the contracted squad.”

Fitzpatrick also cited another player who is likely to feature in the Southern Stars outfit in years to come.

“A young player to watch is Ash Gardner; she can hit a long ball and shows potential with the ball as an off-spinner also.

“We saw improvement across the whole group, so there is a lot to like about the young guns coming through.”

A squad was named for another tour to Dubai beginning March 30.
